I wanted to "Victorian-ise" K-9's design, but still retain his original "box body" shape. This was difficult, because Victorians had a definite preference for making things "anatomically correct," in keeping with their "everything's an art work" mentality. To accomplish both of my goals, I figured I'd simply make the "leg" shapes on the corners more leg-like, even if K-9 still just gets around on wheels. This took a few tries to get right.
I originally had a LOT more details on K-9, but I felt that it made him look cluttered, and fractured the focus point. Just in case you're wondering why he's somewhat lacking in Victorian flair.
Oh, and the "grinders" up front is his "fuel intake," where he can wheel over sticks and such to fuel his steam generators. He's pictured with his doors open for the benifit of the viewer.

Wowza. (And to think it was all my idea... *preenpreen*)
I actually like the legs a lot; you can still see the "box" shape if you're looking for it, but now he looks more like an actual dog and less like a quasi-robot.
The clockwork panels and the etching on the sides of his head are especially nice touches, as is the "Keep Hands Clear" above the grinders. That kind of polite courtesy is very K-9!
All in all, a wonderful likeness and an improvement in many ways. Bravo!
Yes, the gears didn't come out quite as nicely as they have on my other steampunk works, though...I'm somewhat disappointed. I'm happy they could still come across well, though!!
And yes, it was all your idea. Thanks!!
Btw, get on MSN!! lol

Yeah, they didn't come out as good as the gears on my Cyberman or Dalek...but I'm glad they still give the effect of "gears" to people.

Nice job I have no idea what a Steampunk is, since I haven't watched any Dr. Who () but I really like it!
The details are excellent, just the right balance between detail-ful and simple.
Ah!! "Steampunk" is just a genre, a type of science-fiction. It's a weird name, I know, but it's a variation of "cyberpunk," so the "punk" still stays. :S
Anyway, a "steampunk" story is any story that takes place in the Victorian era, or a world resembling the Victorian era (an "alternate universe") that usually deals with or features certain technological advancements that did NOT exist back then...but those "advancements" have to be built using technology and materials available during that time. This robot dog obviously wasn't around back then, but I redesigned him to look as if he was invented back in the 1880s. "Futuristic" or "high-tech Victorian" is a better description of steampunk.
The movie "Wild, Wild West" (even though I think it's a filthy movie that I've never seen the whole thing of) was steampunk, albeit the Western variation of basic steampunk, since it takes place in the Old West.
Does that clear things up??

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
Spencer Kelly visits the Royal Albert Hall to see a digital graffiti wall where you can virtual spray paint to your heart's content and email the results to yourself.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
